Maersk doubles Manila congestion surcharge

Maersk doubles Manila congestion surcharge

Manila: Citing extraordinary congestion in the Philippine capital Maersk Line announced Friday it is doubling its congestion surcharge for transpacific shipments calling at Manila. Starting in November the surcharge will be $300 per teu and $600 per teu.

“Due to a slowdown in port operations, combined with the current import peak season, Manila ports are experiencing an increased level of congestion. As a result, vessel turn times are also increasing, which affects our operating costs. In line with this, we are making an adjustment to the congestion surcharge that was previously announced,” Maersk said.

The doubling of the surcharge is the latest hammerblow to manufacturers in the archipelago whose costs have shot up thanks to a trucking ban which started earlier this year leading to huge congestion at terminals in Manila. A number of manufacturers have indicated they will move their operations to other nations in the wake of the spiralling supply chain costs in the Philippines.  [27/10/14]
