Stalled Dawei port project back on

Bangkok: The on-off progress at the Myanmar Dawei deepsea port project is decidedly back on, following yesterday’s meeting between Thai prime minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and Myanmar president Thein Sein. The pair discussed the project and vowed to kickstart it again on Prayut’s first overseas trip as prime minister.

SeaShip News understands the terms of reference for the bidding for the first phase of the Dawei project are set to be drafted next month.

Meanwhile, a group of Burmese NGOs yesterday urged Burma and Thailand to address the complaints of local communities in southern Burma over a lack of adequate consultation and compensation during the initial phase of the Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ).  [10/10/14]
